Minchie Update

Many thanks to our dear friend, Ann of Zoolatry, for this beautiful graphic.
I want to thank all of you for all the words of support, prayers, purrs, hugs and comfort for my Minchie.  Took him to the vet yesterday and they did another blood panel and this time some very bad news.  He is in serious kidney failure.  Creatinine was 9.8 (normal .5 - 1.4) and bun was 128 (normal 16-36)  This came out of the blue since his last panel three weeks ago.  They gave him sub-q fluids and I'm to give him fluids daily.  It's been ten years, so wish me luck.

They gave him an anti-nausea shot and pills for four days.  Also got an antibiotic shot for urine test (little blood in it and can't remember what else).  There were other things that showed up but I was so dumb founded and my head was spinning that I could not process it all.  We are holding off on the chemo drug for now.

Won't eat on his own and syringe feeding not going well at all so this morning took my index finger and scooped some wet food and it went in his mouth very easily.  I'm so happy he's getting some food in him finally!  Had not been eating on his own for five days.

We have a follow up appointment Thursday at 3:30 and blood will be tested again.  One day at a time!

He's pretty much camping out in his carrier and I follow him everywhere and he's not steady on his feet and is quite the jumper and has fallen off counters a few times.

Will continue to update and again, we can't thank all of you for your purrs and prayers.  We all know the power of the paw.

  1. Oh reading this just breaks my heart. We are purring hard for our longtime buddy! Have you tried the Hill's A/D food? It is very palatable and made for sick kitties. When Tucker was very ill it was the only thing I could get him to eat. Sending love and more purrs.

  10. I am sorry the test results were so bad and what a shock it must have been. I know how distressing it is trying to get them to eat when they have no interest in it. I am sending many more good thoughts and love for Minchie.

  12. I know what you mean about not taking it in. With our Sooty I was just numb while I tried to work out what to do what might happen and how long we might have together.

Hang in there, please. Minchie is so lucky, he has the most loving mum a cat could wish for and he knows it so keep going. Keep Going, One day at a time.

  20. It's so hard when they don't eat. I really hope he'll start eating on his own. Because of his leg weakness, did your vet possibly check his potassium level? I know that can be common in CRF. Big hugs to you both and I look forward to reading an update when you have a chance.

  21. This is terrible to read. I hope that the little he ate turns into a lot more; give him whatever he will eat - whatever keeps his organs going. The best of luck to giving him fluids, the best of luck to Minchie.

  22. We are so sorry to read this. We are purring, praying, and hoping that fluids and a better appetite will make Minchie more comfortable.

  27. Agree with A/D here if you haven't tried it yet. There's also Tiki Cat (they make a Velvet Mousse that is literally like mousse consistency, and Pimp liked it when he wasn't eating). And those little long wet treat packet things... those are super enticing, at least to get some food in. Those are all he'd devour when he wanted nothing else. Thinking of you all. <3

  28. Still sending purrs. Mum doesn't remember Derby's creat level when she took him in, but his BUN was over 300. When she heard that she knew it was time.

  29. Oh Peggy...I'm so sorry to hear that the recent bloodwork and tests didn't yield better results. I know this is hard and that you will do everything for him. I wanted to call you, but didn't know if you were up for talking. I'm here if you need me. Sending all my love, prayers, and good thoughts.
