R.I.P. Scarlett

NEW YORK — Scarlett, the calico cat who made international headlines in 1996 when she repeatedly ran into a burning building to rescue her five kittens, has died.

This book was Mom's "coffee table" book for many years. We will light a candle for Scarlett tonight. What a heroic catmom she was risking her own life to save all her babies.

  1. Scarlett was a true heroine! Mom says that she remembers reading about her story in the news years ago, but didn't know about the book. She says thanks for posting the picture of the cover - now she knows about she can track down a copy. After all, you can't have too many cat books,

Mom remembers that story and the very brave kitty mommy but she didn't know a book was written. Guess she is heavens angel now. 3. Scarlett was a real hero to her little family. We are glad she lived out her life in the cushy lifestyle she so richly deserved.

  4. Scarlett was a real hero. She showed to the world how loyal, caring, and courageous cats are. I'm so happy that she was so well cared for and had such a good home after the fire.

  7. We haven't heard about her but she sure sounds like one strong momma cat!
You hit a sensible spot with your commentary, because my mom is horrified that something like this would happen. Or anything else! I only get out when she's at home and she checks on me when I'm gone for too long. The garden is enclosed by private appartement-houses. In theory, no one from outside can get in. She told me that otherwise she wouldn't have let me out. Truth is, that I demanded it strongly too. My mommy was free to roam the streets and I seemingly inherited that urge. But sadly, I learned about the dangers of the streets at an early age: when I was 13 weeks old, one week before my human mom came to bring me home, my mommy got hit by a car and died immediately. If you want, you can see a picture of her and me here: http://brittanews.blogspot.com/2008/07/in-memoriam.html
    Thank you for caring!

  8. Ms. C remembers first hearing about Scarlett on a A&E special about cats that she liked to watch with the cat that came before us (who loved watching the cats!). It was an amazing story about an amazing family of kitties! We will make a toast in her memory tonight.

  12. We loved Scarlett too and Mum also had the book of her story. She still has a cutting from The London Times when Scarlett's story was first reported.

We are sad she has gone to the bridge. Thank you for posting about her.
