Treeless Tuesday

This is a picture of mom's Christmas tree from a Christmas gone by. She just loved it!It had a cat angel tree topper and 99% of the ornaments were kitty ornaments.

Our sisters-who-came-before-us, Cerise (left) and Lilly (right) just loved laying underneath it. This was Christmas 2006, Cerise's last Chrissymouse with mom.

Well, when Christmas 2007 came along, Laila was a 7 month old kitten. Mom slowly introduced her to the tree but no matter what, Laila absolutely would not go into any room that she could see it from as she was terrified of it. And being we live in a one bedroom condo, she was very limited on where she could go. For two weeks mom put up with this and feeling just terrible her little girl was so terrified of it. Well, mom said Laila was more important to her than a tree, so after enjoying it for 2 weeks, one night before Christmas she came home from work and took it all down and put it away. It still took a lot of patience for mom to get Laila to come out into the living room again with it gone, but finally succeeded. Mom has tried much smaller trees and nothing works. She was a terrified little 6 week old feral kitten when she was rescued so who knows what she went through those first 6 weeks.

So, you are probably wondering what happened to the tree? Mom tried to sell it but no one was interested so she donated it last year to Angel's mommy's work as their office tree was falling apart. She hopes to get over there today or tomorrow to visit it and take a picture of it.

  1. That surprises me, I thought all cats liked trees. It really looked great! My cats always like going under our tree too.

  6. Oh Poor Sweetie Laila! It scares us to even think what scared her so bad when she was a little wee one. It was a stunning tree though. We're still shocked that Cricket hasn't tried to LumberJack her way up our tree yet.

  7. Oh dear, we're sorry to hear that Laila didn't like the Christmas tree! We really like the kitty themed tree. Mom has been looking for years for a kitty angel tree topper.

  9. Wow! Maybe Laila was scared by a tree when she was little and never got over it!

We think your tree was beautiful! Mom loves all kitty ornaments (we got lots of kitty ornaments on our tree too!) and we love the angel kitty tree-topper!

  10. That's okay, really nice humans do whatever it takes to keep us safe...Santa doesn't need a tree for presents...any chair will work nicely. Have a wonderful Christmas my friends!

  11. Wow poor Laila - that is terrible that she was so scared. We had Lola go through a period like that once (though not with a tree) but she eventually was ok (but it was a little different because she was ok, then got scared, then came back). I think that shows what a great mom you have for her to put Laila first - you guys aren't too far so if she needs to see a "realish" tree she can always stop by our place!

And your mom could always start a new tradition, like a Christmas chair or something like that - I bet it would catch on with a lot of cat owners!

  13. It was a beautiful tree, and I loved all the kitty ornaments. Makes you wonder what she went through before you got her for her to be so afraid.

  14. Poor little Laila. Something terrible must have happened to her with trees.

My mom and your mom must have been telling lots of secrets based on how long they chatted last night.

  15. Your mom will always have the memory of the tree, but what makes the holiday is the love in our hearts for our fellow creatures.

  17. Awww, poor Laila! What a great Mom you are for putting her needs and feelings before yours!

Our Mom won't put up a tree this year either, but not for the same reason... We will destroy it!! We're not violent little boys, we just love to play with EVERYTHING!

    Merry Christmas!

  18. Poor Laila must have had a very bad experience with a tree in her first few weeks of life.

  19. I liked your photo from the Chrismouse's past. That was really nice of your mom to put the tree away so Laila wouldn't have to be shut up away from it. Family first I always say. Maybe next year the mom can put the tree in one room and keep it there by itself, serve it right.

  20. Laila, we don't have a tree either, as we have a chair where the tree used to go.

However, we have a big wire frame designed for cards, and we hang decorations and lights from that, and have chrismouse lights on our mantlepiece.

    Have a super chrismouse everybuddy!!

  21. That tree is beautiful, but your mewmie very thoughtful to Laila and her fears. And very nice to donate it too...good feelings all around.

Our mewmie hasn't put up a tree in a couple of years, but when she does, it's all cat ornaments too, except for one bird and one mouse...just for us she says!
